16 Steps for Discovery and Empowerment: The 16-step empowerment model is a wholistic approach to overcoming addiction that views people in their wholeness-- mind, body and spirit. A fundamental basis of this model is flexibility and an openness which leads to continually ask: What works? Who does it work for? and How can we help it work better? It encourages people to be continually open to new information and not to become trapped in dogmatic teachings.
At its core, this model is based on love not fear; internal control not external authoritarianism; affirmation not deflation; and trust in the ability of people to find their own healing path when given education, support, hope and choices.
This empowerment model encourages individuals to develop their own internal belief system based on their perceptions and experiences. It is fluid and open to change as the person evolves.
It believes that a major task of healing from addiction is to validate the underlying, positive survival goals for safety, connection, pleasure, love and power. Then to find non-addictive and positive ways to meet those needs. It is also crucial to create a healthy physical balance to prevent cravings.
The 16-step model addresses issues of cultural diversity and internalized oppression stemming from sexism, racism, classism, and homophobia. In this model, the concept of "codependency" is understood as a form of internalized oppression,
rather than an addiction to security, in a cultural context as well as an individual problem.
In surveys sent to both male and female members of 16-step groups asking for responses, respondents most often listed: improving self-esteem; helping them believe in their own wisdom; giving them permission to be creative; expressing and validating their personal beliefs and feelings; and helping to be more courageous as being the positive effects of a 16-step group.
The 16-step model encourages people to use this or any other model as a springboard to find their own voice. And while it is crucial to acknowledge the power of addiction, this model helps people affirm the power they do have to take charge of their lives and overcome addiction.
Developing one's passion, finding purpose, bonding with others and becoming involved in social change are seen as antidotes to addiction. This approach does not posture itself as the one way or the right way, nor does it make assumptions about the length of time it takes or the path that must be followed.
Nine-Step Pagans: In modern everyday usage, the term Pagan (capitalized, as is Christian or Hindu or Sikh or Jew or Muslim, etc.) usually means neo-Pagan, but many consider this term an oxymoron, while others enjoy the paradoxical implication of "modern-old fashioned".
For the purpose of the organization NINE STEP PAGANS, the noun "Pagan" refers to a person whose faith and worship includes a deep, abiding respect and love for the Creation of which humans are a part, and a desire to live in balanced relationship with self and the rest of the natural world.
Although not exclusively, people who identify themselves as Pagan tend to honor the "Old Ways" of some of our pre-Christian ancestors, or the religious teachings of modern day "indigenous" peoples whose lives and mores are interpreted to emphasize the need for a mutually beneficial integration with the world of nature.
Pagans are extremely varied in the details of their beliefs, and may be polytheistic, duo-theistic, monotheistic, or other; lifestyles may range from emulation of the Middle Ages to 21st century cutting edge technocracy, at times superimposed upon each other.
** Pagan-friendly refers to those who tolerate or even enjoy the company of the sorts of people described above, but may not identify themselves as Pagans. Just as many people not holding Judeo-Christian-Islamic heritage or beliefs have benefited enormously from 12 Steps, it is hoped that many people not identifying themselves as Pagans will benefit from 9 Steps.

Elder Resources & Referrals
Here's a few more specific AARP links for resources for elder healthcare:
"Men and women approaching retirement age should be recycled for public service work, and their companies should foot the bill. We can no longer afford to scrap-pile people."
-- maggie kuhn, founder
The Gay Elder Circle: Our Mission
"We are a group of gay men, more or less fifty-five or older, who have assembled to support each other in becoming gay elders. We come from a wide range of backgrounds and are united in our primary purpose of being useful to younger gay men and of service to the gay and larger community.
We make a distinction between "elder" and "older". In our society today an elder is someone who consciously claims that role through visibility in the community, is aware of being a part of the continuity of life, honors those who went before and is of assistance to those who are coming after him, and actively attends to the spiritual needs of a community in the broadest sense of the word.
An older (senior citizen, old person) is often a person who celebrates a birthday each year and waits for death with little sense of a larger role for himself in the community. He often retires, disappears or is discarded. We show respect for both elders and olders.
